The central medallion features the "Simorgh", the quintessential Persian bird. Legend has it that this benevolent creature treasured great wisdom as it lived through so many ages that it saw the destruction of the world three times and, like the Phoenix, its destiny was to disappear in flames to be reborn from its ashes.
This legendary bird is a fundamental part of Persian art and literature and is specifically mentioned in the famous epic poem written in the 10th century by Ferdowsi: the "Shahnameh" or "Book of Kings", which tells the history of Persia from ancient times to the time of the Islamic conquest.
On either side of the central figure are depicted the "lammasu", winged bulls with human heads of Assyrian heritage and protective character, which were represented at the monumental entrances to the ceremonial centre of Persepolis with some variations. In the corners we can see lotus flowers, one of the most common floral figures in the bas-reliefs of this great palace city, capital of the Persian Empire under the Achaemenid dynasty.
