24.5 cm hand painted ceramic plate with elegant calligraphic "nastaliq" design in white letters on a rough turquoise background with gold floral decoration. The Persian text is a poem by Hafez which coincides with Gazal No. 1 of his work The Divan of Hafez and reads as follows: "O innkeeper, pass the cup of wine and bring it to me! For love seemed very simple at first but in the end it turned out to be hard and difficult." (The first verse is written in Arabic and the second in Persian; this is because the famous poet knew the entire Quran by heart in the original language in which it was written and from time to time he liked to add a few Arabic phrases.)
The beautiful style of calligraphy "Nastaliq" is used especially in poetic literature or with a decorative aspect in advertisements, titles and hand-written or painted works of art. Mir Ali Tabrizi, originally from Tabriz, was the creator of this beautiful form of artistic expression in the 14th century.
